Curtailment and Stochastic Curtailment to Shorten the CES
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies–Depression (CES-D) scale is a well-known self-report instrument that is used to measure depressive symptomatology. Respondents who take the fulllength version of the CES-D are administered a total of 20 items. This article investigates the use of curtailment and stochastic curtailment (SC), two sequential analysis methods that have recently been proposed for health questionnaires, to reduce the respondent burden associated with taking the CES-D. A post hoc simulation based on 1,392 adolescents’ responses to the CES-D was used to compare these methods with a previously proposed computerized adaptive testing (CAT) approach. Curtailment lowered average test lengths by as much as 22% while always matching the classification decision of the full-length CES-D. SC and CAT achieved further reductions in average test length, with SC’s classifications exhibiting more concordance with the full-length CES-D than do CAT’s. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed.

Optimizing the assessment of suicidal behavior: The application of curtailment techniques.
BACKGROUND Given their length, commonly used scales to assess suicide risk, such as the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) are of limited use as screening tools. In the current study we tested whether deterministic and stochastic curtailment can be applied to shorten the 19-item SSI, without compromising its accuracy. METHODS Data from 366 patients, who were seen by a liaison psychiatry se...

BACKGROUND The Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with Pain-Revised (SOAPP-R) is a 24-item assessment designed to assist in the prediction of aberrant drug-related behavior (ADB) among patients with chronic pain. Recent work has created shorter versions of the SOAPP-R, including a static 12-item short form and two computer-based methods (curtailment and stochastic curtailment) that mon...
متن کاملShortening the Current Opioid Misuse Measure via computer-based testing: a retrospective proof-of-concept study
BACKGROUND The Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM) is a self-report questionnaire designed to help identify aberrant drug-related behavior in respondents who have been prescribed opioids for chronic pain. The full-length form of the COMM consists of 17 items. Some individuals, especially compromised individuals, may be deterred from taking the full questionnaire due to its length. This study e...
متن کاملOptimal Power Flow in the Smart Grid Using Direct Load Control Program
This paper proposes an Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithm by Direct Load Control (DLC) programs to optimize the operational cost of smart grids considering various scenarios based on different constraints. The cost function includes active power production cost of available power sources and a novel flexible load curtailment cost associated with DLC programs. The load curtailment cost is based ...
متن کاملImpact of Uncertainty on Wind Power Curtailment Estimation
Ireland and other countries in the EU have binding targets for production of energy from renewable sources by 2020. Ireland’s Renewable Energy Action Plan aims to meet this target by producing 40% of electrical energy from renewable sources and most of this will come from wind power. In order to forecast the amount of wind power capacity required, it is necessary to forecast the amount of wind ...
